The power of words

There is power in words. I can still recall statements from decades ago, some that edified and some that decimated me. I’m sure you can, too. When those statements come from people in authority, they seem to carry more weight with us. Those in authority should “know,” so we tend to believe what they say. At the time of this writing, James was concerned about the affect of people who were trying to step into authority positions not to benefit the body but to gain attention and notoriety. Some were making themselves the focus instead of directing the flock to focus on Jesus, the One who saves. Those who lead brethren astray, causing them to stumble in their faith, were condemned by Jesus Himself. In Matthew 18, He said, “woe to the person through whom they come,” when speaking of confusing messages or behaviors that distorted true belief in Him. We must be wise and discern what we’re being fed. We must read God’s Word for ourselves. We must ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. There are many false messages but only one Messiah: Jesus Christ, the One sent by God the Father to seek and save the lost.
