‘Sing We Now of Christmas’

“No’l Nouvelet” is a traditional French Christmas carol. This was long ago translated into English as “Sing We Now of Christmas,” though the lyrics were tweaked quite a bit for rhythm and rhyme. There are several different versions in English, but I’m sharing the one with which I am most familiar.

Sing we now of Christmas,
Noel sing we here.
Hear our grateful praises
To the Babe so dear.

Chorus:
Sing We Noel, the King is Born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!

Angels called to shepherds,
“Leave your flocks at rest;
Journey forth to Bethl’hem
Find the Lamb-kin blest.”

Chorus:
Sing We Noel, the King is Born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!

In the stall they found Him;
Joseph and Mary mild
Seated ’round the manger,
Watching the holy Child.

Chorus:
Sing We Noel, the King is Born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!

From the eastern country
Came the kings afar,
Bearing gifts to Bethl’hem,
Guided by a star.

Chorus:
Sing We Noel, the King is Born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!

Gold and myrrh they took there,
Gifts of greatest price;
There was ne’er a stable
So like paradise.

Chorus:
Sing We Noel, the King is Born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!
