Do you notice the repetition here? Think about when you repeat something—it’s usually because it’s important and you want those to whom you’re speaking to hear it. Paul is very clear: we have an obligation to rejoice. Rejoicing can be difficult when you’re in the midst of conflict, but consider where Paul was when he wrote these words—in a Roman prison cell, awaiting certain execution. Yet he found it within himself to rejoice. Did he rejoice in his circumstances? Probably not. He rejoiced in HIS SAVIOR. Paul knew that nothing of this world could steal away his promise of heaven with Jesus. We can adopt this same attitude. When circumstances drag you down, REJOICE in knowing the situation is temporary. But when we reach eternity, we will know joy forever more.
