There is a dual meaning to the words “The Lord is near.” Paul wanted us to live with the expectation that Jesus could return at any moment. He wanted us to be ready for the trumpet’s call. Secondly, he reminded us that our Lord is already near. My mom used to tell me when I was going out with friends, “Remember Jesus goes with you. Don’t do anything that you’d be embarrassed for Him to part of.” It was sound advice to the teenage Kim, and it’s sound advice for each of us today. If we are constantly aware that Jesus is our Companion, we’ll be less likely to treat people badly, to engage in unGodly behavior, to behave in a way that brings us regret. He is near! Take comfort in that realization.
