For centuries, people had anticipated their coming Messiah. If you were standing in the crowd the day John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and made the claim in John 1:29, would you have been surprised, elated, or disappointed by Jesus’ appearance? After all, the people expected a mighty warrior who would rescue them from their oppressors. What they didn’t know is God had sent a humble Lamb to rescue them from themselves. Sin is so ugly. It harms, it divides, it destroys. It promises death. But Jesus brings us LIFE. Look! The Lamb of God has come! And He’s coming again. (Suggested hymn: “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus” by Charles Wesley.)
